Prom Dress Program 2010!
Judy Dancause
The search is on - for a date & that special dress! Yes, that’s right, Prom season is quickly approaching. For teenagers, hoping to attend THE social event of their high school years, prom represents the best of their high school years - and all of the stress that goes with it. Every teenager has the opportunity to go to Prom - but not every teenager (or their family) can afford the cost involved for that special night.
Prom night can be such an important turning point. It represents a coming of age. Parents start to see their teenagers as young adults instead of the children they raised. Everyone, with or without a date, should be able to go to their Prom.
The Agapè Centre is thrilled to announce our Annual Girls & Dreams Prom Dress Program. This program is a little bit different from our usual requests for donations of food, blankets and pots & pans - but it is needed just as much, if in a different way. We are looking for Prom, Bridesmaid and party dresses that are fashionable and that would be appropriate for a young girl to wear to prom. It can be expensive to buy all of the assorted paraphernalia needed for the big night. Dresses can cost anywhere from $100 to $600.00, when you add shoes, purse, hair and nails, going to prom will cost $150.00 and up.
On March 8th the Centre will setup a special “boutique” just for the graduating teens in need. Everything from dresses, shoes, purses and jewelry will be available. Many volunteers and community partners have helped us organize this program and ensure that every girl can have their dream prom – regardless of their financial situation.
Everyone at the Agapè is excited to continue offering this program as we have seen many young people over the years have to miss out on that special night because of the financial situation of the family. It has been wonderful in the past few years when hundreds of girls have been assisted to find “THE” dress for their big night. Before we started the program, we often had girls rushing to our Thrift Shoppe every day just before closing for weeks - hoping to find a dress they could afford. It was while helping these girls that we discovered that many of their friends would not be attending their prom because of the family’s financial situation.
If you have a used Prom dress, an evening dress, shoes (or any other accessories) that you don’t need in your closet - please help make a dream come true. Dresses of all shapes and sizes are needed. All donations will be greatly appreciated and can be brought to the Agapè Centre at 40 Fifth Street West.
Local People Helping Local People - that is who we are and what we do.
